Derick Pope is a good athlete whose understanding of how to play the game is still evolving. Physically, he combines a slim but powerful physique, with good leaping ability, and agility. Those physical attributes allow him to be very successful on the defensive end of the floor, in transition, and attacking the rim. He is a very proactive defender who is at his best in run and jump type
systems where he can trap the ball-handler, fly into passing lanes, or block shots from the weak side of the floor. Offensively, he runs the floor very well, has a good first step, and finishes everything around the rim.
